2016 Scholarship Awards Night


St Lucie County Education Foundation Awards Scholarships

The St Lucie County Education Foundation awarded over 60 scholarships on May 11, 2016 to graduating students of the St Lucie County Public School District.  Joseph E. Smith, Clerk of the Circuit Court, St. Lucie County, was the Keynote Speaker.  He was joined by Kathryn Hensley, School Board Chairman, Masters of Ceremony Dr. Kevin Perry (Assistant to the Superintendent) and Todd Smith, Principal at FPCHS as well as Kerry Padrick, Chief Communications Officer for the School District.

Also in attendance were School Board members Dr. Donna Mills, Carol Hilson and Debbie Hawley and Education Foundation Board members Carissa Zerga (Foundation President), Tod Mowery, Elizabeth Mallonee, Ian Cotner, Vicki Rodriguez, & Dr. Donna Mills.

The annual ceremony, held at Fort Pierce Central High School was preceded by a reception offering the students and parents an opportunity to meet their scholarship sponsors, judges and dignitaries.

Each year the Education Foundation solicits corporate and individual sponsors to support the Education Foundation General Scholarship Fund or make a donation to a named scholarship.  The Education Foundation also facilitates the awarding of several memorial scholarships, such as the Aaron Project Scholarship, in memory of Aaron Beauchamp, the Tess & Abbey Huber Scholarship which was presented by Roberta Huber, the Christian Medina Baseball Scholarships presented by Madeline Medina, the Jeff Furst Scholarship, the Hattie D. Byrd and Harry Lee Williams Scholarships as well as the Andrew P. Schmeer Scholarships.

In his keynote address Mr. Smith stressed the benefit for all the students to go forth and expand their educational aspirations while encouraging them to eventually come back home to live, work here and help improve our community.

Mr. Jones, the Executive Director of the Education Foundation thanked all of the parents, educators and sponsors, as part of our “greater village”, for their caring support of our children.  He also pledged a strengthening of the scholarship program in the years to come and noted that the Education Foundation has been providing scholarships for over 20 years.

Scholarship benefactors included the Mallonee Family, Spherion Staffing, Ken & Aileen Pruitt & Family, AT&T, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, St Lucie County Fair Association, St Lucie County CTA/CU, Children’s Services Council and Tu-Bahd Farms, among others.
